The Chimpanzee Tracking at Gombe

The Chimpanzee Tracking at Gombe safari by Nature Bound Africa is a specialized primate expedition to Tanzania’s smallest and most iconic national park, Gombe Stream.

This tour is defined by its intimate connection to the pioneering research of Dr. Jane Goodall and offers a rare opportunity to observe habituated chimpanzee families in their natural forest habitat.

Expedition Highlights:
Chimpanzee Trekking: The primary activity involves guided hikes through steep, lush forested valleys to track wild chimpanzees. Once located, visitors spend exactly one hour observing their social dynamics, grooming, and play.

Jane Goodall’s Legacy:
Hikers visit the site of the world’s longest-running primate research project. Key landmarks include Jane’s Peak, which offers panoramic views of Lake Tanganyika, and the Kakombe Waterfalls.

Diverse Primate Encounters:
Beyond chimpanzees, the park is home to eight other primate species, including olive baboonsred colobus, and red-tailed monkeys.

Lake Tanganyika Activities:
The safari includes scenic boat transfers from Kigoma. Between treks, guests can enjoy swimming or snorkeling in the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, which is world-renowned for its colorful cichlid fish

Standard Itinerary & Logistics
The typical 3-day itinerary focuses on maximizing time within the park:

Day 1: Flight from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma, followed by a visit to the Dr. Livingstone Memorial at Ujiji. A boat transfer then takes you across Lake Tanganyika to Gombe for an initial evening trek.

Day 2: A full day of exploration featuring a morning chimpanzee trek and an afternoon hike to Jane’s Peak and the waterfalls.

Day 3: A final morning in the park before taking a boat back to Kigoma for your return flight.

Essential 2026 Trip Details:

Best Time to Visit:
The dry season (June to October) is optimal for trekking as trails are firmer and chimps are easier to locate.

Permit Costs:
In 2026, chimpanzee tracking permits are approximately $100 per person, plus a standard park entry fee of $100.

Age Restriction:
Participants must be at least 15 years old to track chimpanzees in Gombe.

Accommodations:
Stays are typically at the TANAPA Rest House or tented camps like Gombe Forest Lodge USD 670 Per Person per night
