Premier Climbing Destinations
  • Tanzania: Home to Mount Kilimanjaro
     (5,895m), the highest peak in Africa.  Nature Bound Africa offers various routes like Machame (6-7 days) and Lemosho (8 days) starting from $2,200 to $5,000+. Mount Meru (4,562m) is a popular 3-4 day “warm-up” climb.
  • Kenya: Mount Kenya (5,199m) is the second-highest peak. While Batian and Nelion require technical rock climbing, Point Lenana (4,985m) is a trekking summit accessible via the Sirimon or Chogoria routes. Tropical Wild Expeditions offers 4-day treks starting around $728.
  • Uganda & Congo: The Rwenzori Mountains (“Mountains of the Moon”) offer challenging glacier trekking. Margherita Peak (5,109m) on Mount Stanley is the highest point. Rwenzori Expeditions provides 7 to-12-day treks.
  • Ethiopia: The Simien Mountains feature the highest peak in the Horn of Africa, Ras Dashen (4,543m). These treks are famous for endemic wildlife like the Gelada monkey and Walia Ibex.
  • Rwanda & Congo (Virunga Chain): Focuses on volcanic climbs. Popular treks include Mount Bisoke and Mount Karisimbi in Rwanda, and the active Mount Nyiragongo in Congo, which features the world’s largest lava lake.
Regional Climbing Experiences
  • South Africa: The Drakensberg Mountains (uKhahlamba) offer extensive multi-day trekking and rock climbing, including the famous Amphitheatre and Mont-aux-Sources (3,282m).
  • Namibia: Brandberg Mountain (Königstein peak at 2,573m) is the highest, known for its ancient rock art. Spitzkoppe is a premier destination for technical rock climbing.
  • Madagascar: Mount Maromokotro (2,876m) is the highest peak, located in the remote Tsaratanana Massif, typically requiring a 10-14 day expedition. Andringitra National Park offers more accessible granite peak climbing.
  • Zimbabwe: Mount Nyangani (2,592m) in the Eastern Highlands is the highest point and a popular day hike.
  • Botswana: While largely flat, the Tsodilo Hills offer gentle rocky hiking and contain one of the highest concentrations of rock art in the world.
