Maasai Mara National Reserve

Maasai Mara National Reserve:

The heart of the Great Migration and home to large predator populations.

Pros:

Unparalleled wildlife viewing.

Dry weather makes roads accessible and wildlife easier to spot due to sparser vegetation. This can also bring more animals to watering holes.

High concentration of big cats and other predators.

Cons

Higher prices for accommodations and tours.

Popular parks, especially the Maasai Mara, can be crowded.

Best Time for the Masai Mara

If the Masai Mara isn’t on your bucket list, it should be!

This reserve is one of the highlights of any Kenyan adventure. Outdoor enthusiasts and budding photographers will find themselves in paradise here, especially between June and October when wildlife is abundant.

Best Times to Visit the Masai Mara

High Season: January, July, August, September, October, December

What to Expect: Get ready for a bustling vibe! The great migration takes center stage from July to September, attracting crowds eager to witness this incredible spectacle. Just a heads up—prices are at their highest during this time, so it’s wise to book early if you’re planning to visit.

Medium Season: February, May, June, November

What to Expect: This is what I like to call the “secret season.” You’ll find fewer tourists around, which means better prices and more personalized service. Sure, there might be a few rain showers, but don’t worry—they usually don’t last long and won’t put a damper on your adventures.

Low Season: April, May

What to Expect: This is the major rainy season, and you can expect some serious downpours. Rivers might overflow, making some areas a bit tricky to navigate. Plus, many lodges close for renovations in May. However, if you’re up for a little adventure and don’t mind the wet weather, you’ll find some incredible deals and a quieter experience. Just be prepared with your rain gear and an open mind!

Overall, each season has its perks, so choose what suits your travel style best and get ready for an unforgettable experience in the Masai Mara!

Get ready for close encounters with elephants, buffalo, and more!

Green Season (November to May): Lush Landscapes and Smaller Crowds

This period brings Kenya’s two rainy seasons: the short rains (November to December) and the long rains (March to May).

While heavy rains in April and May can make some areas difficult to access, the green season brings rich landscapes, dramatic skies, and newborn animals—always a special sighting.

The air smells like rain almost all the time and you’re likely to have the place almost to yourself, as this time of the year is for the true adventurer.
