Top 5 Tented Camps in the Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is one of Africa’s most spectacular places to visit, and a can’t miss location on any trip to East Africa. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your Masai Mara tented camp is not only top-notch, but fits your own personal travel style. Here are the top 5 tented camps in the Masai Mara, each with its own unique charm that will make you want to come back to visit year after year to try them all.

Kicheche Bush Camp

The Kicheche Bush Camp is a tented camp which will make you think you’ve stepped back into the era of exploration, when the vast plains of Africa were as mysterious and unknown as the depths of the ocean. Of course, you won’t be sacrificing any of the modern amenities either. You’ll be sleeping on a luxury tented bed, surrounded by the fresh African air, and wake up to a cup of dark roasted local coffee as you sit watching the sunrise over the savannah horizon. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Enkewa Mara Camp

A more rustic safari camp, the Enkewa Mara Camp is located on the outer perimeter of the Masai Mara, in one of the less frequented areas of the park. This remoteness only adds to its charm as it immerses you in the surroundings in a way you can’t imagine. The local culture in close at hand, and the red robed Maasai People frequently come and go in this particular area. The camp itself is run by a friendly couple who personally take care that each of their guests is made at home during their stay, and ensure that the tents and camp area are impeccably taken care of. If you’re looking for the real African wildlife experience, it doesn’t come any closer than this.

Naboisho Camp

The Naboisho Camp captures perfectly the very essence of what makes Africa, and the Masai Mara in particular so great. Its 8 tented suites are as lush and luxurious as they are well suited to game drives, and gentle on the environment. The name ‘Naboisho’ itself translates as “Harmony’ and that’s exactly what you’ll find here. Harmony with nature, and harmony with the camp itself, and its friendly hosts.  Smack dab in the middle of the newly established Mara Naboisho Conservancy, the camp works with the local land owning families and tour companies to ensure that your visit through the 50,000 acre wilderness corridor directly benefits the local Maasai people who have lived on these lands for generations. Doing good and having fun have never gone together so well.

Mara Bushtops Camp

For those who would rather forego the ‘rustic’ charm of the previous camps, the Mara Bushtops Camp is the one you want to visit. This is where luxury living truly meets the African bush. The camp itself contains 12 luxury tents, and one family suite tent complete with its only Jacuzzi, definitely not something you’d see at your typical tented camp. There’s a gourmet restaurant and bar as well as a communal pool overlooking the plains of the Masai Mara. If you can manage to pull yourself away from all this, you might have a chance to visit the abundant wildlife that lives all around. If you want the finest in African camping, this is the place to be.

Rekero Camp

Perched above a bend in the Talek River, the focus of the Rekero Camp is definitely on the animals. You’ll see them in the mornings, and evenings as they come to the banks of the river to sip on its refreshing waters, and you’ll see them as you ride though the vast grasslands that surround the camp. This area is home to one of the highest concentrations of animals in the park, and every visit is sure to exceed your expectations. The tents themselves are warm and inviting, and are full of the the natural charm of the African bush. The families that run the camp have worked hard to maintain the legacy of their forefathers, and give you a Masai experience that will make you want to come back year after year.
