1. Walking Safari

While walking seems like a basic activity humans do daily, a walking safari comes with many exciting promises. You would be walking down wonderful terrains of natural greenery and be able to sight some animals. If you were on a walking safari at the Arusha National Park, for instance, you are likely to spot some buffalos, zebras, baboons and other monkey species. It is important to obey the ranger’s instructions to stay safe. Don’t get carried away with taking pictures and overstep. The walking safari in Arusha is so ideal because most parks do not have an artificial feel of caging animals within a space to them. You get to see the animals in their natural habitat.

2. Biking Safari

Arusha Safari Adventure Experience walking safari, bike safaris are guided and usually organized by a tour agency. Indulge in a bicycle tour across the Tanzania Northern Safari circuit, through the Arusha mountain and forest biking trails. Arusha is a mountain bike paradise as it is perched at the altitude of 4,600 feet (1400m). You can expect an adventurous time biking through the wild and natural environment of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. You should expect a game drive first which familiarizes with you with the terrain of the park where the bike safari is to be held. Then, you would be led to the bike trail. It is important to remember that even though this is about biking, it is not a competition and you should not try to lose others in your company especially your guide in a bid to win. The biking safari is more about discovering the fauna and flora around you at close quarters. As with most physical activities, you should try to stay hydrated especially since it can get pretty warm in Arusha depending on the season.

3. Game Driving Safari

This involves driving around the parks and conservation centers in Arusha Safari Adventure Experience in a Jeep or any other vehicle compatible with such a trip. This kind of safari is best suited for older persons who may not be able to indulge in higher impact activity such as biking or walking long distances. You would have a guide to take you close the animals and to give you interesting information about areas you visit. However, the Jeep safari can also be a self-drive if you are up to it. But it is still advisable to procure the services of a guide to avoid getting lost or missing out on some important locations and activities.

4. Horseriding Safari

This is another adventurous safari that takes you the closest to the wildlife as you can ride in more closely and observe. You can start your horse riding tour from the horse base on the outskirts of Arusha Town. The area offers a perfect environment for horse riding and offers a magnificent view of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru from the stables. Exploring the remote African wilderness from the back of the horse is quite exciting and fascinating. Obviously, this kind of safari is only for skilled horse riders and not amateurs. Thus, it is not an occasion to learn horse riding as any little mistake made when riding in the wild could be costly.

5. Birdwatching Safari

Arusha is a great destination for bird watching as Tanzania is home to over a thousand species of birds. This kind of safari differs from the rest and is only for people keenly interested in birds and not generally other mammals. A bird-watching safari in Arusha would likely take you through the Acacia forests and savannahs of Sinya to the mountainous woodland of the Arusha National Park down to Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and possibly ending at the Serengeti plains. You would likely spot birds such as parrots, plovers, turacos, flamingos, weavers, sunbirds and starlings. Depending on your package, some bird watching safaris can be up to 4 to 14 days.

6. Balloon Safari

The Balloon Safari is often a side-safari for most people since the hot air balloon actually takes you high up in the sky away from the close view of the wildlife and natural foliage you want to observe. You can enjoy a Balloon safari in two of the most spectacular wildlife parks in the world – Tarangire National Park and Serengeti National Park. From Arusha, you can organize a trip to these parks for a lifetime experience in the wilderness. It gives you a bird-eye view of everything that you would not notice while on the ground. You would notice some birds and other animals perched in trees. The balloon safari is quite expensive in comparison with the other kinds of safaris. If you are in the balloon during the migration period, you would be able to get excellent views.

Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi is a seasonal shallow endorheic salt lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley at the base of the Serengeti Plateau, just south of the Serengeti National Park and immediately southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater in the Crater Highlands of Tanzania. The lake is elongated, orientated southwest to northeast, and lies in the Eyasi-Wembere branch of the Great Rift Valley.

Lake Eyasi

The Hadzabe bushmen live in this region, as do the Datoga and Mbulu tribes. A visit with the bushmen is worthwhile and they will graciously show you where and how they live and hunt. They subsist entirely off the bush and by bow hunting. Everything they use is made from local materials, including their bows which are strung with giraffe tendon and their arrows which are coated in lethal poison. Their language resembles that of Kalahari bushmen tribe (who were featured in the 1980 film ‘The Gods Must Be Crazy’) with clicking noises used.

The Datoga and Mbulu people are pastoralists, like the Masai people.

The scenery of Lake Eyasi differs dramatically to that of the surrounding areas. Compared to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Highlands this area seems downright tropical. Palm trees border the lake and make homes for birds such as Fischer’s lovebird. Other trees in this area include the umbrella thorn acacia and sand paper bush. The weather is nearly always very hot and intense, as the lake is located in floor of the Rift Valley, the oldest rift in the world. The rift is thought to have opened over 65 million years ago, shortly after dinosaurs became extinct. To view Lake Eyasi on our Tanzania map please click here.

Lake Eyasi’s water levels vary greatly between the rainy and dry seasons. During the dry season the lake is virtually nonexistent and animals are forced to share what water is left, which makes for easier wildlife viewing. The lake can get quite deep during the rainy season and it attracts hippos who like to cool off in its brackish waters.

Bird lovers will be in paradise here, as the lake attracts vast numbers of birds of all sizes and colors. Some main birds to be found here include: Africa spoonbill, flamingos, gray headed gulls, great white pelicans, pied avocet and yellow-billed storks. The main fish found in the lake are catfish and lungfish.

Lake eysai palm trees sunset this region is particularly suited for exploring on foot, and day or half day hikes are highly recommended. It is also possible to go on a hunting trip with the Hadzabe or to visit the other tribes. Almost any time of year is a good time to visit Lake Eyasi with only April and May being questionable as they are when the long rains occur.
