Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Tanzania

Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Tanzania

Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Tanzania is a tantalizing feat that can test a persons limits of strength, but at the same time reward them with sights and sounds that are indescribable to those who have not been there and have not conquered the highest peak in Africa. There is plenty of difficulty and excitement to be had on the slopes of this legendary mountain which is immortalized in words by the great Ernest Hemingway.

With three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira, Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Kilimanjaro National Park near the town of Moshi in Northern Tanzania. At 5,895 m (19,341 ft), it is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. This could be an experience to be combined with a Tanzania safari.

The first successful recorded ascent of Kilimanjaro happened in 1889. Together, on the third attempt of German geology professor Hans Meyer and the first attempt of Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller, the two men reached the highest summit on 6 October 1889, confirming that Kibo had a crater at the top filled with ice. Edward Oehler and Fritz Klute climbed the summit of Mawenzi in 1912 which meant that sixty-four years after European discovery, both of Kilimanjaro’s main peaks had been conquered.

The 20th century witnessed a move from exploration to tourism. Today on a Tanzania vacation, there are six official trekking routes that attract visitors from around the world. Despite its fame, Kilimanjaro is often underestimated because it can be walked and is therefore not technically a climb. However, many mountaineers dispute this saying that the high elevations, low temperatures and occasional high winds make the mountain very physically demanding.

Mount Kilimanjaro has captured the interest of explorers and tourists alike for over a hundred years and remains one of the most popular destinations in Tanzania.
