Description

Places to visit: Kampala and Bwindi National Park.

The tour takes you in a search of the rare mountain gorillas at Bwindi National Park. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is located in southwestern Uganda on the edge of the western rift valley covering 331 sq. kms. It is one of the largest natural forests in East Africa, supporting a large number of plants and animals not found elsewhere. About half the world’s population of 600 mountain gorillas reside in Bwindi.

Along with the gorillas, there are nine other species of primates including chimpanzee, blue monkey, redtail monkey, L’hoest’s monkey, black and white colobus, potto, Demidoff?s and needle-clawed galago. Three hundred forty-seven species of birds have been recorded in Bwindi; seven species are listed as endangered. Species of particular interest include the Kivu ground thrush, white-bellied robin chat, red-throated alethe, collared apallis, short-tailed warbler, yellow-eyed black flycatcher, Rwenzori batis, blue-headed sunbird, strange weaver and the Shelley’s crimsonwing. Over 200 species of butterflies have also been recorded here.

Day 1: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Leaving Kampala very early, it’s a full day’s drive through the beautiful Ugandan countryside to the ancient rainforests of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. On the way, skirt the north-eastern shores of Lake Victoria, and climb into the mountainous south-western region of Uganda through terraced hillsides dotted with traditional settlements. Expect to arrive at our picturesque accommodation on the edge of the forest in the late afternoon. Overnight at Buhoma Lodge

Day 2: Bwindi Gorilla Trek

Bwindi is a magnificent green swathe of dense rainforest and is one of the most biologically diverse areas on earth and a recently proclaimed World Heritage Site. Begin your gorilla trek in the early morning, and set off into the tangled and mist-shrouded forests with guides and trackers who are very experienced at locating the gorillas by finding the nest the family had used the previous night. The search for these majestic animals goes through thick untamed rainforest, where you’ll be scrambling over mossy rocks and through deep undergrowth and it can be arduous at times. But when you come face to face with the gorillas for the first time, the trek there will be more than worth it, and watching gorillas in their natural habitat is a memory that will last a lifetime. After spending an hour with the gorillas we head back to the base camp for a late lunch and a relaxing afternoon. Overnight at Buhoma Lodge

Day 3: Kampala

Departing early in the morning we start our journey back to Kampala stopping for lunch en route. Expect to arrive back in the city in the early evening after a quick but exhilarating visit to the mountain gorillas.
